Expert Glazing, Done Right

We're not a national call centre. We're local glaziers who take pride in every job.

BS EN 1279-2

Moisture penetration testing. Our units are tested to ensure the sealed cavity remains moisture-free for the lifetime of the warranty.

BS EN 1279-3

Gas leakage rate testing. Argon and krypton fill retention is verified to ensure long-term thermal performance.

BS EN 1279-5

Evaluation of conformity — the overarching standard that ensures consistent manufacturing quality and product compliance.

BS EN 1279-6

Factory production control. Our manufacturing processes are independently audited to maintain certified quality standards.

What BS EN 1279 Means for You

BS EN 1279 is the European standard that governs the manufacture and performance of insulating glass units (IGUs) — the sealed double or triple glazed units fitted into window and door frames.

The standard is split into six parts, each covering a different aspect of sealed unit quality. Parts 2 and 3 deal with moisture penetration and gas leakage — the two failure modes that cause misted, foggy, or blown double glazing. Parts 5 and 6 cover the factory production controls and conformity assessment that ensure every unit meets the same standard.

When you buy from Pane Relief, you're getting units that have been independently tested against these standards. This matters because non-certified units may use inferior sealants, thinner spacer bars, or skip argon gas fill — all of which reduce the lifespan and thermal performance of your glazing.

Our Bristol factory maintains full traceability from raw glass to finished unit. Every sealed unit can be tracked back to its component materials, manufacturing date, and quality checks. This traceability is a requirement of BS EN 1279-6 and is what allows us to back our products with a genuine 10-year warranty.

Not all sealed unit suppliers are BS EN 1279 certified. Always ask for certification — it's the only way to guarantee your new glazing meets Building Regulations for thermal performance.

Common questions about glazing standards and certification.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our double glazing repair and replacement services across the South West.

  • While BS EN 1279 itself is not legally mandatory, Building Regulations (Part L) require glazing to meet minimum thermal performance standards. Using BS EN 1279 certified units is the most straightforward way to demonstrate compliance — and is required by FENSA for registered installations.

  • Certified units come with documentation showing the manufacturer's test reports and factory production control certificate. At Pane Relief, we provide certification details with every order and can supply full test documentation on request.

  • BS EN 1279 certifies the manufacturing quality of the sealed unit. Energy ratings (A++ to E) rate the overall thermal performance of the complete window — frame, glass, and sealed unit combined. You need both: a well-made unit (BS EN 1279) fitted in an efficient frame (high energy rating).

  • Yes. BS EN 1279 applies to all insulating glass units regardless of the number of panes. Triple glazed units must meet the same moisture penetration and gas leakage standards as double glazed units.
